The object of the exercise is to lean the boat to windward as the bows head into wind, then use crew weight to pull the boat back upright as soon as the sails fill on the opposite tack. This increases pressure on the sails and accelerates the boat forward. The advantage is particularly noticeable in light winds, but can still be effective up to force 4.

Helm calls ‘Ready about’ to warn crew of imminent tack and, whenever possible, times the manoeuvre to coincide with relatively flat water between waves.
